Divorced TV Evangelists Suspected of Tryst

by Karen Topakian

If you’re overwhelmed by the state of the economy and the economy of our state. Spend a moment on this little missive that the NY Times will never cover.

According to Christian Broadcast News, two divorced television evangelists, Benny Hinn and Paula White, are denying reports that they are having an affair though they were seen leaving a hotel in Rome holding hands.

Granted I had never heard of them but their websites cite them as god’s saviour.

Benny Hinn’s marriage to Suzanne Hinn ended after 30 years. When she served him with divorce papers in February, which struck him by surprise, he stated that his wife had no “biblical grounds for divorce.”

Paula White’s marriage to Pastor Randy White ended in 2007 after 18 years.

Hinn and White both admit to becoming closer to each other but vehemently deny that their relationship is anything but “morally and spiritually pure.”

In order to stem the tide of criticism, Hinn said they had “independently determined that we will have no further social relationship until such time as my divorce has concluded and only if we feel direction from the Lord to do so.”

Here are my questions.

1. Why did Suzanne Hinn wait 30 years to divorce a man who sold the Suffering Christ Desk Ornament?

2. When Paula White said, “Often, in order to bring forth the “BIG” in your life, you have to partner with someone who also recognizes the “BIG” God has put inside of them!” How “BIG” was she hoping that Benny Hinn would be?

A Cross to Bear

by Karen Topakian

They say that the Lord works in mysterious ways. And she surely must when she told 33-year-old Joshua Sarhan to carry a 40-pound cross across America. The ex-Marine totes it on his shoulder while telling people the good news about the Gospel.

Starting on Feb 17 in Arkansas, he has already crossed eight state lines with many more to go as he heads up the East Coast.

Of course he has a FaceBook page. Take Up His Cross, with more than 1,700 followers.

Joshua is not alone, however.

Keith Wheeler has been carrying his cross around the world for the last 25 years visiting more than 185 countries on all seven continents.

Arthur Blessit spent 40 years carrying his cross more than 38,000 miles.

Evangelist Joel Crompton carries a 10 ft cross as part of his street ministries.

Tom Alexander has carried his 10 ft cross through more than 100 cities in California though his sports a wheel from a movable fence.

All of these people said that God told them to do this. That their lives changed for the better as a result. Giving up addictions and party boy behaviors. Turning away from a life of crime.

The cross helped them become better people, they say. It encouraged them to pray for and help others.

Not being a religious person on any level, I find this behavior to be quite curious.

It surely raises a few questions.

If the Romans had more sophisticated means of capital punishment, like lethal injections, would these devout men be carrying needles around with them instead? Would it have the same impact?

Not meaning any disrespect but what possesses people do such things? And how do they know that it’s god talking to them?

Anybody have any insight into this behavior?  I am truly curious.

Ralph Reed Wants to go to Congress

by Karen Topakian

Take out your wallet. Because you will want to give and give big to…Ralph Reed’s bid for Congress from the Peach State. Georgia.

It’s not official yet but this man, once described as a “baby-faced assassin” by former New Hampshire Senator Warren Rudman, is seriously considering campaigning for the seat held by retiring Republican Rep. John Linder.

This isn’t his first run for office, he tried before. For the Lt. Governor of Georgia. But he lost. Despite this failed bid, he worked on seven presidential campaigns and advised 88 senatorial campaigns.

Not a stranger to scandal, Reed “secretly accepted payments from Jack Abramoff to lobby against Indian casino gambling and oppose an Alabama education lottery.” So says the Indian Senate.

And we all know where Jack Abramoff is today – at the Federal Correctional Institute in Maryland serving a four year prison sentence for “trading expensive gifts, meals and sports trips in exchange for political favors.”

Reed’s current day job – running the Faith and Freedom Coalition, where they “believe that the greatness of America lies not in the federal government but in the character of our people — the simple virtues of faith, hard work, marriage, family, personal responsibility, and helping the least among us. If we lose sight of these values, America will cease to be great.”

If you haven’t heard enough about this Ph.D from Emory University, you will know the organization he once led. The Christian Coalition.  Unfortunately, while he was the director of this Pat Robertson founded organization, the Federal Election Commission (FEC) launched an investigation for expressly advocating the election or defeat of clearly identified candidates. A definite no-no for an organization seeking tax-exempt status.

Two years later the Coalition lost their 10-year fight to gain a tax-exempt status because of their political activity – preparing voter guides for distribution in churches that expressly advocated a specific candidate.

Heard enough?

As a footnote, while working on his college newspaper, Mr. Reed penned a column called, “Gandhi: Ninny of the 20th Century.”

Christians Urged to Pray for Liberals

by Karen Topakian

Liberty Counsel Playing Cards

Blogs sometimes write themselves. And today is one of those days. This headline says it all.

“Liberty Counsel Unveils ‘Adopt a Liberal’ Cards.”

According to the Christian Broadcast Network, for a mere $20, one crisp Jackson, you can buy a deck of 51 playing cards that feature the photos of “high-profile Democrats*”…to pray for them.

It’s part of Liberty Counsel’s Prayer-In-Action Program.

Taking a lesson from St. Paul, they are praying for our national leaders. Not to insure their health and well-being. But that God will intervene, “so each can become a good influence on our Nation’s culture.”

The Liberty Counsel website urges its readers to “pray earnestly and intensely for them! Pray that the Lord would move upon them and cause them to be the kind of leaders who will encourage others to lead “a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.”

I guess they will they be praying for these liberals to vote against the death penalty, torture, and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and in favor of gun control.

Who are these high profile liberals anyway?

The list includes: New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, Massachusetts Congressman Barney Frank, White House Director of Science and Technology John Holdren, Executive Director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State Barry Lynn, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, President Barack Obama, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Senate President Harry Reid, Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger, Maine Senator Olympia Snowe, Talk Show Host Alan Colmes, MSNBC Commentator Keith Olbermann, MSNBC Rachel Maddow, And the Unknown Liberal – fill in the blank

Liberty Counsel is so sure that these pious methods will work that they, “fully expect that many of our adoptees will “graduate” from this prayer program with vivid testimonies of God having changed their lives and worldviews!”

Now that would be a miracle!

*Democrat does not equal liberal. President Harry Reid? Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Senator Olympia Snowe? If only they were…liberals.
